The NFL, both in the real world and in fantasy sports, is a real worldwide phenomenon. With people from all over the globe following its games and idolizing players and teams, it is no surprise that the international eye has taken an interest in American Football.
That being said, in any sport, there are various controversies and topics that are almost taboo to discuss in terms of legality and loopholes. CBD oil is one of the hottest topics— and rightfully so because it has been one of the most influential substances that have been used on and off the field to aid in either performance or recovery.
What is CBD Oil?
Cannabidiol, or better known as CBD, has been a popular natural remedy for decades now and rightfully so, due to its qualities as a relaxant and pain reliever. It is a naturally derived chemical found in the marijuana plant, Cannabis sativa. It is made by extracting oil from the plant and diluting it with compatible carriers such as coconut oil.
Although highly controversial, the substance has been known to relieve muscle aches and the like, without the attributed “high” that is linked to the marijuana plant. This quality makes CBD a very appealing option to people who are looking for organic and natural remedies for their ailments.
What are the benefits of CBD Oil?
It is a potent relaxant
CBD is said to be effective in treating anxiety and can serve as an organic replacement for pharmaceutical drugs, with slightly reduced side effects. It is scientifically shown to reduce cognitive impairment during stressful tasks such as public speaking and alleviates the feeling of “butterflies in the stomach,” leaving more room for focus and strategic thinking.
It is linked to improved cardiovascular health
Along with its relaxant qualities, it also has the ability to lower blood pressure, thereby reducing the risk of strokes, heart attacks, palpitations, and the like.
CBD has been studied and linked to pain relief because of its ability to impact the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) which regulates involuntary bodily functions such as pain, sleep, appetite, and our immune system. People who have chronic pain have reported positive results when exposed to CBD according to various studies around the world.
Where does CBD fit in with the NFL and the Fantasy League?
This is what Mike James, a 27year old free agent is asking. The player reportedly submitted a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) for the drug but was rejected because the NFL said that he could not give them concrete evidence that he suffered from chronic debilitating pain.
For some, they believe that it was a risk on Mike’s part to ask for a TUE because it could result in his career in the NFL and the Fantasy League coming to a dead stop. For him, however, it was his chance to give himself a break and also to help other players in the league who need the drug to function at top performance.
The NFL rejected his request, but he is still hopeful that a solution will be found to help his cause and for the future of CBD oil in the league. He and his lawyers are still pushing for its legality, or at least, for the NFL to acknowledge the existing science and stand a chance for it use.
